Estimate the dose, the particle fluxes and the single event upsets that your orbit and shielding give.

  1. Open Radiation Analysis

The page has the mission parameters on one side and the results on the other.

This page needs a free account.

    Open the page
  2. Enter the mission

Enter the altitude in km, the inclination in degrees and the duration in years.

  3. Enter shielding and electronics

Enter the aluminium shielding thickness in mm, as a spherical equivalent, choose the component class (COTS, industrial or radiation hardened), the SEU LET threshold in MeV·cm²/mg and the memory size in bits, for example 1e9 for 1 Gbit.

  4. Run the analysis

Press Run radiation analysis. The results appear in sections.

  5. Read the results

Mission TID gives the total ionising dose in krad(Si), to compare with what your parts tolerate. The particle environment gives the electron and proton fluxes and the L shell. SEU gives the upsets per device per day and in the mission, and warns when EDAC or TMR is needed. Displacement damage gives the NIEL dose and the end of life solar array loss.

Good to know
  • Change one value at a time to see which choice changes the dose most.
